Probably the cutest cosmetic item I’ve come across so far and also maybe one of the best performing mascaras out there – I want to introduce you to Mr Winkle (a mascara with a face seems to deserve a name!), or more commonly known as Tony Moly Cat’s Wink Mascara!
While Pink Sakura sent me this precious little wand a few weeks back, I haven’t written a review on it until because of an annoying little problem of having eyelash extensions, causing me to be physically unable to wear any mascara (explained in my post on that subject)!! Find out further below how I overcame this little hurdle.
Tony Moly Cats Wink Mascara has a very clear theme – an elegant black shiny feline with a devilish grin (and a heart for a nose). I mean it makes sense, right? Big lashes for a sassy, catty look!
The branding and product title is printed in similar white ink in beautiful contrast to the shiny black finish of the tube.
However, I would have thought it would make sense to have the cat’s face line up with the product title, and, being a little OCD about ‘product closure alignment’, I proceeded to try and screw on the handle various ways to make these meet up!
The size of this product is compact, which I really appreciate. I have never understood why brands like Maybelline made such huge mascara tubes, so that they take up half your makeup bag!
The best part? Pulling this cutie out to touch up your mascara and being the envy of all your friends!
Tony Moly Cats Wink Mascara comes in two types, #1 Volume & Longlash, and #2 ‘Curling & Longlash’. I am reviewing #2. The main difference is the shape and design of the brush. This type has a crescent shaped brush tip for curling, while the volume type has a straight shape, with more closely placed bristled.
The colour is decidedly black. The formula, as you can see, is quite thick.
With so much effort having been invested in the aesthetics of this product, I was determined to put it through various tests of its performance, to see if it worked as well as it looked.
As I am unable to test this product out on myself, I’ve enlisted my lovely housemate, Verity, who already has impossibly long and curly lashes. So here’s the before.
In one application, lashes are immediately thickly coated for a dramatic effect, and there is visible lengthening of the lashes. Verity’s natural curls are fully retained by this mascara, while, she reports, other mascaras usually weight down the lashes and straighten her lashes out. However, it does not seem that this mascara is particularly effective in actually creating any curls. One thing I have to comment on also, is that this product does easily clump and therefore tends to not always apply evenly. However, this is easily remedied by brushing off clumps with an eyelash brush. In any case, I think for Asian lashes, which are usually much sparser and shorter, this kind of formula is generally desired.
I can immediately draw a comparison between Tony Moly Cats Eye Mascara to Kiss Me Heroine Make Long and Curl Mascara, which has very similar properties.
Next is a smudge test. After giving the m
ascara ample time to dry, I asked Verity to rub her eyes. We were pleasantly surprised to find that Tony Moly Cats Wink Mascara does not seem to smudge, or cause panda eyes. However, some flaking was evident. Overall, however, this mascara looks like one that would last all day long.
Knowing from experience that some non-smudging mascaras are impossible to remove, even with the best makeup removers on the market (e.g. Kiss Me Long and Curl Mascara), the final important test was ease of removal. I used my trustee Estee Lauder Gentle Eye Makeup Remove, which is generally considered capable of removing everything not tatooed on, and while it took quite a few wipes, we managed to fully remove Tony Moly Cats Wink Mascara from Verity’s eyes without a trace. Another tick for Mr Winkle!!
And finally, what about the price? At only $10.50 at Pink Sakura, it’s already almost half the price of popular drug store mascaras such as those by Maybelline and MaxFactor.
Now, I am a huge fan of Tony Moly. The brand has quite the reputation of producing incredibly cute and yet effective, worth while products. Something I’ve been eyeing for quite some time is the Tony Moly Petite Bunny Lip Gloss Bar, with each flavour featuring an attractive shade of pink, and a different bunny facial expression!
- The most adorable packaging for mascara, possibly, of our time
- In one application, dramatically define and lengthen lashes
- Buildable for a more dramatic look
- Excellent for use on lower lashes
- While may not create eyelash curling, holds curls extremely well
- Does not weigh down lashes
- Does not smudge easily or cause panda eyes, even when rubbed
- Easily removed
- Very affordable, and you can make this yours for only $10.50 at Pink Sakura
- Can be clumpy and can apply unevenly. May need an eyelash brush to remove access.
- While the product does not easily smudge or cause panda eyes, it does tend to flake
