In the 2000’s, we were at war with fast food. Drive-ins and take-outs were public enemy number one, held responsible for a world wide obesity epidemic, and ‘Super Size Me’ became a generational icon. So it was inevitable then, that in the 2010’s, fast food references would become high fashion. Anya Hindmarch made her new season arm candy from advertising images of nutritionally void children’s breakfast cereals, and Moschino (with Jeremy Scott back for a second collection) somewhat controversially served u ap heavily Mcdonald’s inspired line complete with french fry phone covers and happy meal handbags. A bit of a mixed bag of moral messages there. But just to sum it up: it’s not ok to eat fast food, but it’s ok to wear it.
And the point of that long introduction? Oh, only that my girl Heather (Heatstorm Blog) and I went twinning in our Perpetually Five McDonald’s Tee’s to – as you do – binge on Happy Meals at the skate park. Local Canberra label Perpetualy Five (designer Mitch Thompson) is, as the name suggests, all about preserving and reliving childhood nostalgia. And what Australian childhood was complete without those trips (or longing there of) to get burgers and fries, served on a paper place mat printed with Ronald McDonald cartoons (I guess the clever marketing towards kids was a fantastic success). I can pretty much imagine Mitch’s delight when he came across the vintage McDonald’s themed printed fabrics, which he ingeniously applied as front pockets to these Pear and a Spare (another local brand) shirts.
Yes. This shoot was just as fun as it looked. Heather’s half of this photoshoot is here!
Perpetually Five will be showing at this year’s FASHFEST, Canberra’s biggest annual fashion event held over four nights from 30 April to 3 May 2014 with different designers every night!
Canberra Airport (awarded Australian Airport of the Year 2013) is once again a major partner of FASHFEST. It will be providing a huge, beautifully designed space, which will be transformed to house FASHFEST’s highly anticipated fashion parades – I for one am dying to see it!
Get your tickets here before they sell out! Also, read my blog post detailing all the types of tickets up for grabs.
