In the lead up to this year’s highly anticipated FASHFEST – Canberra’s biggest annual fashion event – I’ve teamed up with a number of Canberra designers to show off a little of what you can expect from our local talent (More accurately, I turned up at the FASHFEST designers’ hang out at Three Little Birds & Little Boy Blue in New Acton last week and grovelled until they let me wear their beautiful clothes!).
I’m so excited to share part 2 of my photoshoot in collaboration with Canberra Designer SZN. In part 1 (Concrete Mermaid) I styled a feminine hand tied Lycra net dress. This time, for something completely different, I’m wearing SZN‘s iconic cut out shorts. Like most of SZN’s creations, this piece is unisex, and infinitely versatile in how it can be worn. Last year, these shorts walked down the runway at FASHFEST 2013 as a menswear piece, worn over abstract printed tights (also produced by SZN). For me, I love the how the cutouts allow skin to show through for a cool contrast. If you’re wondering, like I was, how this piece was made, the form was evidently constructed, meticulously, from small scraps left over from materials used in other design processes. This is key to SZN designer, Susan Dlouhy’s design ethos – sustainability and zero waste.
I’m excited to see what Susan has in store for her show at FASHFEST 2014. If it’s like her previous collections, we can surely expect something completely unexpected.
FASHFEST is Canberra’s premiere annual fashion event. It’s held over four nights from 30 April to 3 May 2014 with different designers showing each night.
Canberra Airport will once again provide the space to house FASHFEST. It’s all very hush hush, but so far we know that it will be an expansive, beautifully designed space, which will be transformed by the FASHFEST team, including stunning lighting by Canberra’s Elite Sound and Lighting.
