As this Alexander Wang x H&M Collection pretty well sold out in Australia on the first day, I realise this is probably a bit late for Aussie fans. But there’s always eBay. And for those in the parts of the world where the Alexander Wang x H&M Collection is just about to open, I’ve got a few tips on what pieces have been getting the most attention from collection that you should seriously consider investing in.
1. The Alexander Wang x H&M Scuba Sweats – both men’s and women’s
These scuba logo sweat shirts are set to go cult. There was no ambiguity about that, with everyone grabbing one of each colour of the women’s cropped scuba tops at today’s Alexander Wang x H&M opening in Sydney. The longer men’s version was also quick to go. In fact, in Sydney, the mens’ collection sold out completely within the first 30 minutes. At just $69.95 grab on.
2. The (Alexander Wang Freja) Suede Boots
The Freja boot from Alexander Wang’s ss 2010 collection went down in fashion history, and Alexander Wang is rejigging that iconic style, including the inclusion of neoprene panels and a stiletto rather than flat heel. This one’s got history, and just for that, it’s a golden opportunity for those who like to collect. Due to the high quality make and the throwback to a classic Wang design, even at the more hefty price of $199, these boots will probably have great re-sale value. 3. The Alexander Wang x H&M Perforated Pattern Top and Dress
The perforated pattern top and dress are on the more expensive side, but personally I think they are the best pieces of the collection. It’s probably not that apparent from photos on the interwebs – which do not do their beautiful quality justice at all, but the quality of these pieces are amazing. I have to admit I expected these pieces to be made with flimsy chiffon but in fact they are made with a heavy, slinky knit fabric which drapes beautifully, and the perforations are not laser cut, but are in fact knitted. Worth the price of $169, and also throws back to Alexander Wang’s popular ss 2013 collection. As these pieces are seen actually worn, they will become more and more covetted. Therefore I think these pieces have great investment potential.
4. The Alexander Wang x H&M Bustier
These are a steal at $39.95, so you’d be silly not to get one. This bustier might not look that impressive lying flat, but wait till you try it on – super sexy and so flattering. 5. The Alexander Wang x H&M key-rings and Sunglasses
Usually I refrain from picking up to many shiny trinkets as they just end up cluttering your life, and the sunglasses from this collection are not everyone’s style, but I have to let you know of an anterior objective for procuring a couple of the Alexander Wang x H&M key-rings – the packaging is amazingly chic and keep-sake-able. You’ll never get the chance to get these heavy duty matte finish gift boxes again, so even if you’re not into the key-ring, it’s worth picking one up for $14.95 just for the bonus box. Also, the sunglasses come with a high quality neoprene zipper storage pouch that is collectible as well. The sunglasses are only $39.95. 6. The Duffle Bag
Having seen all the Alexander Wang x H&M bags in the flesh, I’ve got no doubt that the Duffle Bag is the one to buy. At $139, it’s much more affordable than the other less practical bags, and this one is actually wonderfully usable as an overnight bag or airport bag – not too big not too small. While it isn’t leather, the material is high quality and the bag is constructed beautifully. You don’t see this in the online photos, but the four rubber rivets at the base of the bag are 3D ‘AW’s’ – how cool is that?
7. Padded Leather Jacket The Alexander Wang x H&M leather jacket
is well and truly the investment piece of the collection. You might gasp at the price of $349 because it’s more expensive than the other outerwear pieces, but you have to put the value into perspective. This is a leather jacket. I don’t know of many places where you can buy a high quality leather jacket for $349, let alone one designed by Alexander Wang. But not forgetting the most important thing, this jacket is absolutely amazingly designed – perfect length, it’s a quilted style but still manages to look compact when worn, and Mr Wang has not missed a beat with the intricate black hardware detailing and tapered elastic sleeves. This is not just a jacket to swag in just because it’s an Alexander Wang x H&M. Like all of the pieces from this collection, this one will actually do what it’s intended to do – keep you warm.
