The world is full of people for whom a particular mundane object holds excitement and delight. Some have their bottle caps, and other have their bobble head desk ornaments. For me, it’s something so much tamer – the classic white t-shirt. I think there’s nothing as clean and versatile as a simple white tee, and I have a whole section of my wardrobe dedicated to their exhibition. So I guess have have a thing or two to say about buying t-shirts.
After reluctantly culling my substantial collection of white tees during my move to Perth last month, I’m already on the rebound with this T by Alexander Wang number scored from The Outnet at a bargain $50. Yes, I do call that a bargain, considering these tees usually hit triple digits at full price. But it’s not really about the price. I get that we usually have an instinct of shopping low-end for basics and splurging on key pieces, because, a t-shirt is a t-shirt is a t-shirt, right? Well, I don’t personally believe that a t-shirt from K-mart for $10 can be ‘just as good’ as a t-shirt for $200 (although some exceptions do occasional exist). As the t-shirt is such a simple style, the slightest variation in cut, style and fabric can make a huge difference to the overall look. What ever the price of the t-shirt, quality is the number one must. And this means both high quality fabric and a purposefully thought out design.
I would give a miss to stiff synthetic fabrics which just don’t fall right on your body, or overly thin weaves which look more like paper. A white t-shirt should drape casually, but not be so heavy that it hangs. And careful thought should be given to the cut and fit. Extremes are not always a bad thing. A super oversized t-shirt can double as a dress, and a tight fit is perfect for layering.
