10 ways to wear a coat, which are as easy as they are chic.
It’s all but unimaginable to me that there might be anyone who isn’t completely sold on the winter coat as a wardrobe staple for the cooler seasons (even if you do live in a climate that’s not strictly cold enough to warrant one). And yet I’m reminded of a time when I also avoided wearing a big woolly coat for fear of the unflattering bulkiness that it would bring. However, there’s bad bulkiness, but then there’s ‘good bulkiness’. It’s all in the way you wear it. Here are my picks of 10 ways to wear a coat that everyone should try.
Drape it on the shoulders
Draping a coat is your number one strategy for looking effortless chic for autumn/winter. You know, like you casually grabbed your coat on the way out and didn’t even have time to put the arms in. The misconception that this is something only ‘eccentric fashion people’ do is woefully out-dated.

Ultra-oversized
You might think that wearing oversized would only make you look bigger than you are. However, by employing some tricks for highlighting your figure, an ultra-oversized coat can actually make you look slimmer in comparison. As long as the coat is not too structured on the shoulder, you can usually buy a coat a few sizes too big to get the oversized look.
Normcore
A nice relaxed coat is always a good base for a perfect weekend normcore look. It’s all about dressing up impeccably in casual, unassuming pieces, styled to perfection. Wear your coat with sweatshirts (even better, with a big sports brand logo), sweatpants or chunky sneakers (or all of the above). A well-worn beanie and a men’s watch are also good ideas.

Turtle necking
What could be more luxe than a big turtle neck peeking out from under a voluminous wool coat? I simply can’t think of a thing right now! The chunkier the turtle neck, the better. For the all important final touch, tuck your second day hair into your jumper haphazardly.
Sharp tailoring
Take a page out of men’s style and combine a luxe wool coat with a sharp tailored shirt and trousers for a dapper winter look. Keep the vibe feminine with pointed flats or pumps.

Tonal layering
One of the easiest ways to achieve a guaranteed put-together coat look is to layer your coat tonally with similarly coloured pieces. Incorporate different lengths and textures to add interest and contrast. The more layers the better.
Double-jacketing
Who says you can’t wear two jackets at once (or even three, if you dare)? I love the double-jacket look because it’s fashion forward without being impractical. With your volume up top, you just need to make sure to balance this out with some fitted bottoms.

Coat worn as a top
If you can’t decide what top to pair with your coat, then just go ahead and wear the coat as a top. With a relaxed, draped coat, you can wrap it across to create an instant V-neck.

Camel on Black
Camel being the perfect colour for a winter coat, is a sartorial fact, as is the fact that camel on black is the most classic of classic colour combinations. For best results, try sticking to just these two colours for your outfit, including your accessories.

Black on Black
Black on black (on black) is always a good idea. This is not only a sleek versatile look, but it’s also guaranteed to be flattering. Contrasting different lengths and textures, and revealing an appropriate amount of skin will ensure this look doesn’t turn into one black mass.
