Layering leathers with Casey Tanswell Designs and an interview with the designer
Wearing: Casey Tanswell Designs’ Velvet New Tuxedo Jacket, Leather Asymmetric Skirt and Skinny Slouch Leather Pants | Also: ASOS Strappy Heel Shoes (similar)
While success in fashion is unlikely to be distilled into exactitudes, looking at the journeys of those who have built strong brands can give insight into the tools with which to arm oneself.
Like all good things these days, I first discovered eponymous Australian fashion label Casey Tanswell Designs on social media, and fell in love with Casey’s unique vision for creating artful and unexpected (but incredibly wearable) sculpted designs. Casey Tanswell Designs’ beautiful AW15 collection is the subject of today’s editorial (shot at Perth’s own Hello Parry HQ) – a veritable feast, both visual and sensory, of plays on the sheerness of silk organza, the refractivity of velvet, and the pliable and sculptural qualities of lambs leather.
Read on for my interview with the designer on her label and how she has achieved her success.
Having launched your label in 2012, you have achieved phenomenal success, with your pieces are being worn by fashion icons like Jennifer Hawkins and Dannii Minogue. What has been the highlight of your journey, and what’s next for Casey Tanswell Designs?
Being so supported by these women that I respect and admire is truly an honour. There is also no greater compliment than a customer choosing to wear one of my pieces, every time someone feels beautiful in something of mine is a highlight. The first model hitting the runway at my first show will always be one of my fondest memories.
The next focus for the label is international expansion. I have always drawn inspiration from European art and architecture, so it seems fitting to delve further into this culture, whilst also maintaining my roots in Australia.
For you, clothing is an art form, and through your unique but classic designs, you want to present women as works of art. How then, do you envision that the Casey Tanswell woman would be portrayed in a painting or sculpture?
This is a fantastic question, and very true; I firmly believe fashion is an art form. I would envision the Casey Tanswell woman to be a botticellian temptress: sensual, alluring, and utterly bewitching.
How important are fabrics and materials in your design process?
For me they are crucial. I always start a collection inspired by a certain theme, however oftentimes the fabric will define a design. If I am struck by a fabric I work within the characteristics of that fabric. If it has stiffness or structure, I want to create something sculptural. If it has drape or sheen I’m drawn to form something that flows and ripples under light.
What are your key strategies for staying motivated and juggling all the different demands of your business?
I’m still very much learning how to do this! I think the most important lesson I’m learning is that you need to take time to rest. It is easy to get in the habit of working constantly, however creativity thrives at play and you will be a better businessperson and designer if you can allow yourself some downtime.
You had quite a career change, going from events co-ordinator with an International Business Degree to launching your own fashion label. What advice can you offer others who want to pursue a similar path?
Pay attention to your business model and lay your foundations correctly. Any cracks at the start will eventually tear the business down if they haven’t been adequately addressed. Build a team around you that you can trust and rely on and learn to collaborate and take advice. Nobody is good at everything. By being humble and taking on the advice and expertise of others, you will continue to learn and your product and business will be stronger for it. Finally, trust your gut. You are doing this for a reason. You have a voice and a vision. Make your mistakes and own them, but let them be your mistakes.
