How to wear outerwear in summer

As if you needed anymore anecdotes evidencing my unhealthy obsession with cold weather dressing, the sight of yours truly strolling around town in jacket and boots the other day, in the height of summer, would surely have convinced you once and for all.  While you may not have the degree of separation anxiety I feel towards winter layering, making your outerwear pieces go the distance through all four seasons is capsule wardrobe 101. Here are my tricks to wear outerwear in summer.

1 Heat enduring fabrics

I’d never advocate big wooly overcoats for 30 degree temperatures – outerwear in light, breathable fabrics are always climate neutral. Black absorbs light (and therefore, heat), while white reflects it, so a lighter palette is your best bet for keeping cool. My long line blazer and tailored vest are summer ready pieces by Ang.Studio. With its debut collection, Indonesian designer Angelia Prisc has created layerability for an equatorial climate.

2Feather light layering

Layering is absolutely possible in summer, made possible by switching the chunky knits for feather light separates. The luxe silk camisole is one of my summer wardrobe staples, blurring the lines of loungewear and daywear.

3Outerwear as separates

Finally, think outerwear as separates for summer. Wear a blazer as a v-neck top, or a sleeveless trench as a dress. If the buttons are too sparse, cross it over bathrobe style and cinch it with a belt or scarf.
